An overview of Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease

Patients with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) have moderate kidney damage with glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 30-59ml/min. In this stage, the decline of kidney function can cause excess water and waste products to build up in the blood, leading to various symptoms and discomforts. If uncontrolled effectively, these symptoms can worsen patients' condition.

What are symptoms of Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease?

In stage 3 CKD, the following symptoms may start to appear along with kidney damage.

● Fatigue: Patients with CKD always feel tired that is due to anemia or build up of uremic toxins.

● Swelling: Excess fluid will stay in the body when kidneys lose their ability to maintain fluid and sodium balance. Then, patients may notice swelling in the legs, hands or face around the eyes.

● High blood pressure: More than 50% of people with CKD have hypertension.

● High creatinine level: When half of kidney function is lost, creatinine level raises easily.

● Urinary changes: Urine may be foamy with protein in it, or dark orange, red or tea colored if the urine contains red blood cells. Besides, the person is more likely to urinate more or less.

● Kidney pain: Mostly, CKD patients don't have this symptoms. Only if patients' kidney problems due to Polycystic Kidney Disease or infections can kidney pain occur.

● Poor appetite: The deposition of waste products and gastrointestinal complications can cause poor appetite.

● Sleep problems: Itching, muscle cramps or restless legs can make it difficult for CKD patients to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Can Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease be reversed?

In stage 3 CKD, kidneys can still do their job but not so effectively. This is because some kidney inherent cells are still good, some are just damaged, but others are necrotic. At present, no treatment can make the necrotic cells alive again. Don't worry! It is possible to repair the damaged kidney cells. Once these cells become alive, patients' kidney function and GFR will be improved largely. When the GFR level increases to 60 or more, it means stage 3 CKD is reversed successfully.

How to treat Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease?

Because the moderate decrease of kidney function leads to the build up of waste products in the blood, various symptoms appear. In this condition, the effective treatment should include well control of symptoms, kidney repair treatment and a healthy diet.

1. Control symptoms well: Individuals with stage 3 CKD have a great difference in using medicines, as they have different symptoms. For example, if one person have swelling, diuretic or steroids may be needed according to his condition. Remember always make sure you are taking correct medicines to ease your discomforts that is helpful to keep your kidney disease from aggravating.

2. Kidney repair treatment: Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, based on TCM, has been used maturely to handle damaged but not necrotic cells. On one hand, this therapy is able to extend blood vessels so as to increase blood flow to kidneys. Then, damaged cells can get enough nutritions and oxygen from blood. On the other hand, Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy can degrade extracellular matrix, thus restoring glomerular basement membrane. Finally, patients' kidney function can be improved.

3. A healthy diet: Management the intake of sodium and protein is the basic dietary requirement for people with stage 3 CKD, while potassium and phosphorus is usually not restricted unless the levels are above normal. Additionally, making sure the amount of calcium and vitamin intake is also very important. Working together with nephrologists here, you can find get benefits from your diet and treatment.
