Renal bone disease occurs easily when kidney problem develops to end stage or we can say kidney failure stage. In medicine, renal bone disease is also called renal osteodystrophy or renal osteopathy and usually occurs as a complication of kidney failure. Here we mainly introduce how kidney failure cause renal bone disease.
To know well about renal bone disease, let’s firstly understand how kidney works.
Kidney is an organ with function of maintaining electrolyte balance. When kidney tissues are injured for some reason, kidney function will decrease. Consequently, electrolyte disturbance appears. Phosphorus is a mineral that make up 1% of a person’s total body weight. The normal blood phosphorus range for adults in most labs is 2.5 to 4.5 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). When we ingest too much phosphorus at one time, kidneys will help to discharge excess phosphorus in the body. Therefore, when kidney function is impaired, excessive phosphorus can not be removed timely and as a result, hyperphosphatemia appears.
The amount of phosphorus in the blood affects the level of calcium in the blood. Long-term high phosphorus level will affect our body from absorbing enough calcium. When calcium level in blood is lower than the reference value, parathyroid glands will release a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH) which will draw calcium from the bones to raise blood calcium level. Over time, renal bone problem will be caused.
Besides, kidney is responsible for secreting calcitriol, a form of vitamin Dm which plays the role of helping our body absorb dietary calcium into the blood and bone. When kidney failure is caused, calcitriol level will decrease and this can also contribute to the appearance of renal bone disease.
In cases of kidney failure, there are many factors that can contribute to the appearance of renal bone disease. Aside from the above two factors, metabolic acidosis, plumbism, and parenchyma calcify also play a part in causing renal bone disease. Therefore, when renal bone disease is caused by kidney failure, we must receive comprehensive treatments to prevent all the factors that may cause renal bone disease. Only in this way, can renal bone disease is treated fundamentally.
