IgA Nephropathy or Berger’s Disease is a glomerular disease which is caused by deposits of protein immunoglobulin A (IgA) inside the glomeruli within the kidneys. Normally, immunoglobulin A, an antibody, can help fight the thing that is attacking your body. However, It is the immune dysfunction that has caused production of immune complex and damage on kidneys. IgA Nephropathy can eventually lead to blood and protein in urine, high blood pressure, edema in eyes, face, hands and lower legs and other signs of chronic kidney disease. The following will state the symptoms of IgA Nephropathy in a detailed way.
In early stage of IgA Nephropathy, no obvious symptoms present. IgA Nephropathy is a progression disease, and sometimes even if you experience IgA Nephropathy, it can take many years before you show symptoms. Maybe in a routine checkup your doctor detect signs of IgA Nephropathy. Symptoms of IgA Nephropathy may include the following:
1. Fatigue
Fatigue is a common symptom in IgA Nephropathy and affects most patients. The dysfunction of kidneys can not secrete enough hormone, called erythropoietin which is responsible for producing enough red blood cells, carrying oxygen through your body. In this case, you will be in a state of hypoxia. Therefore, IgA Nephropathy patients usually feel fatigue.
2. Pruritis
The deposition of IgA in the skin of patients may contribute to this cause of symptom.
3. Flank or back pain
IgA Nephropathy patients say that the pain can change from a mild backache to unbearable pain which makes them unable to walk.
4. Blood in urine
The color of urine is cola or tea-color which is caused by red blood cells in the urine. The clinic research has shown that blood in urine is related to a cough, respiratory infection or fever. The urine is darker than normal due to red blood cells in urine. Besides, the urine usually has a strong smell.
5. Proteinuria
Proteinuria refers that there is the presence of large amounts of protein in urine. It is said that proteinuria and blood in urine are the two most common symptoms of IgA Nephropathy. The occurrednce of protein in urine is caused by injured kidneys. Normally, kidneys filter our protein from urine. Because of IgA Nephropathy, kidneys are damaged and lose this function. When a patient finds his or her urine is more bubbly than normal, protein in urine may have been very evident. In urinalysis, if a patient’s protein level is more than 150mg/d. In this case, it shows that protein is considered high.
Even if you have no symptoms, sometimes there also shows signs of blood or protein in urine. However, it does not always mean you have serious illness, because many other causes can also lead to hematuria or proteinuria in urine. In this condition, you can take certain medications to control the symptom. However, if the blood or protein in urine continues for a long time, you should see a doctor immediately, because this may be a symptom of IgA Nephropathy.
