Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a disease that the kidneys have trouble in filtering out waste products and fluid from the body. CKD is divided into 5 stages and patients may experience different symptoms in different stages. Now, let’s have a look about what symptoms CKD patients will experience in different stage.
Symptoms of CKD in Stage 1 and 2
A person with stage 1 chronic kidney disease (CKD) has kidney damage with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at a normal or high level greater than 90 ml/min. And stage 2 is 60-89 ml/min. To be honest, there is usually no symptom in CKD stage 1-2, as the residual kidney function is strong enough to help maintain a normal life in these two stages. For this reason, CKD in early stage is hard to be founded.
Symptoms of CKD in Stage 3
A person with stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD) has kidney damage with a moderate decrease in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 30-59 ml/min. In this sate, a half of kidney function has been impaired, so various symptoms begin to appear. For patients with stage 3 kidney disease, the most common symptoms include fatigue, foamy urine, blood urine, kidney pain, swelling (edema) and sleep problems and so on.
Symptoms of Stage 4 CKD
People living with CKD stage 4 are usually suggested to make preparation for dialysis or kidney transplant, as in this stage, more than a half of kidney function has been affected. Kidney plays an extremely important role for a normal life, so when kidneys are serious damaged, patients will not be able to live normally and at that time, aside from symptoms that appear in CKD stage 3, they also run a high risk for bone problems (bone pain, bone fracture and osteoporosis), digestive problems (poor appetite, nausea and vomit), shortness of breath, poor memory, itchy skin, poor concentration and so on.
Symptoms of CKD stage 5
CKD stage 5 is also called End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) which is the most severe illness condition. In this stage, kidneys have lost their ability to working, so dialysis or kidney transplant is usually needed. Once illness condition progresses to this stage, apart from the above symptoms, symptoms like decreased urine output, numbness of limbs and diarrhea occur easily.
Lastly, for patients with CKD, the more severe, the more symptoms they will experience and also the more serious these symptoms are. Therefore, a tight control of illness condition is the basic to reliving or removing these symptoms.
